Elder sister of Lucy Liu from Melbourne, Australia. Zhuoya was arrested in late 1999 and early 2000 for appealing for Falun Gong and brought back to Urumqi by the policeman of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Each time she was detained for 15 days, and placed under house arrest for a length of time at her work place, and deprived of her rights to teach. In autumn 2000 she was forced to leave home to avoid further persecution, but was arrested again. In June 2001, she was sentenced to 3 years term in forced labor camp. She is currently detained in Wulabo Labor camp of Urumqi.
